David Alexander Kirkpatrick is a native of Beckley, WV and is the son of Lula Belle (Harbison) Kirkpatrick and James Mason Kirkpatrick. His parents divorced when he was relatively young, and thus David and his siblings were raised by their mother as a single parent, who taught school by day and worked at a grocery store by night. Consequently, David and his siblings through their mother's example learned to appreciate both the value of an education and hard work.

David Alexander Kirkpatrick is a 1989 graduate of Beckley's Woodrow Wilson High School. While attending Woodrow Wilson High School, David earned a four (4) year Army R.O.T.C. scholarship. From there, David attended West Virginia State College and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science. Through solid academic performance and his extracurricular activities, David was blessed to receive the Thomas and Nancy Shepard Fellowship to attend Washington & Lee University's School of Law. The Thomas and Nancy Shepard Fellowship at Washington & Lee University School of Law is awarded to top law school students that are willing to commit to four years of practice in the criminal law. While at Washington & Lee University School of Law, David A. Kirkpatrick founded and edited the the Race & Ethnic Ancestry Law Digest (R.E.A.L. Digest) which was subsequently adopted by the Washington & Lee School of Law as a law journal.

David A. Kirkpatrick has been engaged in the practice of criminal law ever since. He clerked with the United States District Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia before his third year of law school. Upon graduating from Washington & Lee University School of Law in 1996, David A. Kirkpatrick began his legal career with the litigation defense firm of Pullin, Knopf, Fowler & Flanagan concentrating in the areas of insurance defense, civil rights, employment discrimination, and criminal defense. David A. Kirkpatrick continued to work for Pullin, Knopf, Fowler & Flanagan until 1999, when he was then recruited to litigate insurance defense and criminal defense cases directly for Nationwide Insurance Company's trial division in southern West Virginia from 1999 until 2000. In 2001, David A. Kirkpatrick opened Kirkpatrick Law Office, PLLC to use his knowledge and experience to assert the claims and protect the rights of the private individual, and to help the ordinary everyday man or woman navigate their legal interest through our judicial system- be it a personal injury case, criminal case, or family law.

David A. Kirkpatrick is a veteran. As an Army R.O.T.C. scholarship recipient, he incurred a four (4) year commitment to serve our country in the United States Army Reserve. David A. Kirkpatrick met this four (4) year obligation to our country and continued to serve for a total of fourteen (14) years in the United States Army Reserves. He was the company commander for both the 492nd Replacement Company and the 554th Postal Company. He deployed to Iraq with the 554th Postal Company from December 2004 to December 2005 during the Iraq War. As commander of these two Army units, David A. Kirkpatrick has been assisting soldiers under his command with various family court issues that arose since 2001. The assistance he gave his soldiers under his command brought him to the practice of family law where David A. Kirkpatrick expanded his representation to the general public in the areas of divorce, child and spousal support, child custody, adoptions, and modification matters.
